Alpha course for all who want to learn religion basics
The essence of Christianity, not the ceremonial or even the denominational beliefs of a specific church is the focus of The Alpha Course, a 10-week course offered at the Ashland United Methodist Church. The class, for adults, begins with a Sept. 10 barbecue cookout at 6:30 p.m. on the Methodist Church property south of Ashland on Old Highway 63.
The course is not "how to be a Methodist," but basically Christianity 101, according to leaders Carole Iles and Kim Aitkens.
"We want to present Christianity in a way that allows people to ask questions," said Iles. "It is low-pressure, a course for those who have been in a church all their lives, but have questions."
Both Iles and Aitkens say the non-denominational Alpha Course, taught nationwide, also provides Christians the opportunity to interact and meet new friends.
"It is about religion, not about church," Aitkens said. "It is about getting to know God, without the committees."
The meetings consist of a dinner, provided free, a short video and small group discussion.
A few sample topics include: "Who is Jesus?" How can we have faith?" "Why and how do I pray?" and "How does God guide us?"
Aitkens said she was raised in the Methodist Church, but left the church as an adult. She returned to church after attending the Alpha Course.
Iles emphasized that those who attend are not expected to attend the Methodist Church at the conclusion of the course.
"This is about evangelism," Iles said. "This will be our fifth class (at Ashland United Methodist Church) and we have eight to 20 people in each class, but not all of them attend this church."
