After last week's annual Red-Black scrimmage, the Southern Boone Eagles football team is set for their opening kickoff of the regular season when they travel to Cole Camp on Friday.
Kickoff is set at Cole Camp for 7 p.m.
Coach Kevin Hixson and his assistants divided the Eagles into two Red-Black squads early last week and the two teams competed against each other in practices before the scrimmage, leading the coaching staff to be cautiously optimistic about the season opener.
Like any other first game of the season, Hixson said if the Eagles make fewer mistakes than their opponent and don't turn the ball over, they can win the game.
"If we can hang on to the ball and play hard-nosed defense, we will win," Hixson said. "This is a great match-up for us against a school that has been playing about as long as we have. They have 30 players out this year and they will be playing at home, so they will be fired up."
Friday's scrimmage was highlighted by the play of two quarterbacks - Cole Finley's athleticism and Trey Lacy's 60-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Sherman.
"We wanted to see Cole under fire and he did pretty well," Hixson said. "It has helped that he has had a lot of reps in practice and he is very athletic."
