Some change is due
If one word could sum up the 2008 election, it would be change. Senator Obama, the new President-elect, supported his whole campaign on this six-letter word. Here at home, Missouri welcomed a new governor into office. Another friend of change, Jay Nixon's campaign banners read, "Jay Nixon. Independent. Experienced. The Change We Need." Voters passed Missouri propositions A, B, and C, bringing change to our state's casinos, home healthcare, and energy sources. And, by a mere 411 votes, Chris Kelly defeated two-termed incumbent Ed Robb to become the new State Representative from Missouri's 24th district.
It has been 14 years since he last held a seat in the Missouri House, and now that Kelly is back, he must follow through with his campaign promises and bring much needed change to Missouri. On his proposed agenda:
Increase funding for public pre-schools, elementary, and secondary schools and stay away from vouchers, which draw public funds away from public schools
Give support to the teaching, research, and service of the University of Missouri and free the research mission of MU from political interference
Restore health care coverage to the nearly 100,000 low income Missourians who lost their coverage at the hands of Governor Blunt
Work across party lines and end partisanship in the General Assembly
